Sunday Times Teaser 2608 – Football Logic

by John Owen

Three football teams (with captains A, B and C) play each other once in a tournament, gaining three, one and zero points for a win, draw and loss respectively.  The order of the teams in the tournament is set by the points scored or by goals scored if points are equal.

After the tournament the captains only knew the results of the games in which their teams had played.  On asking them in turn whether they knew their team’s position their answers were, A ‘no’, B ‘no’, C ‘no’ and A ‘yes’.

What was C’s team’s tournament position and what was the result when A’s and B’s teams played each other?
